Recently in an exchange in the House of Commons, opposition MPs were asking that the Conservatives respect the CWB farmer plebiscite vote. This vote resulted in the majority of farmers voting to retain the single desk for wheat and barley. Harper's response was:ìIn this so-called plebiscite not only did a significant portion vote against the wheat board, it did not include those tens of thousands of farmers who have walked away from that institution."That is a very interesting statement for Harper to make because in the last federal election only 39 percent voted for the Conservatives. So if one wants to talk about voters walking away from Harper, simple math tells us that over 60% ìwalkedî away from him and his party! Millions of voters!!It looks like the whole CWB single desk issue from Harper's perspective has nothing to do with democracy or voting, but rather removing any power farmers have in the grain trade and their ability to determine their own fate.
