In defence of the Bergen Rocks

Reader Darla Bornholdt defends the town’s decision to spend public dollars to acquire sculptures like this one situated along Highway 27 in Olds.

The letter to the editor printed in the Albertan March 12 brought tears to my eyes. The cruelty of the words is stinging.

Everybody does have an opinion but when it comes at a cost to an individual’s reputation, it hurts.

Upon reading his words, I’m assuming that he didn’t bother (wasting his time) reading the meaning of the sculpture which the town staff and Mr. Burke worked hard to set up via plaques and audio.

I am also guessing that the author has not seen the sculpture collection, visited the acreage where the sculptures are placed, or listened to the stories and meanings of the artists’ creations.

As for speeding by at 60 K, you go ahead, but not everyone will. Maybe there are some of us who will take the time to enjoy the walk along the paved path, read the story, take a picture and reflect on a more quiet, peaceful and meaningful life.

I also think it’s appalling how the author assumes to know Mr. Burke and how he feels about the collection.

I suggest that we take the author’s stinging account of art culture and place it alongside his favourite painting with the donkey’s ass (oops, tail) where it’s not visible.

I hope that Mr. Ullman is not on the public art committee because, according to his taste in art, even the “twisted minds of the art snobs” will be warped.

I know you are not an acquaintance of Mr. Burke so please show some respect by not calling him by his first name.

As previously stated in a commentary on behalf of the Town of Olds dated Feb. 12, this is an international exhibit exclusive to Bergen Rocks. There is no other collection of this origin and magnitude in Canada.

This display will continue the conversation, hopefully in a more positive, uplifting spirit that the artists meant them to be. Check out http://mortonsculpting.blogspot.com.
