When it comes to elections in Canada, we have three at the top of the list: municipal, provincial/territorial as well as federal. We show up to vote in strong numbers at both the provincial (57 per cent) and federal (68 per cent) elections, but when it comes to the municipal elections, Sundre drops the ball. The Town of Sundre showed a nine per cent voter turnout at the last municipal byelection. Wow!
Why is that? Do we feel that the provincial and federal elections are somehow more important? This is simply not the case. In fact, local government is where decisions are made that affect all of us directly.
Whether it is a pothole filled, or the town and county councils working together to advocate for a new hospital in Sundre, all issues that affect this community start right here.
Sundre and area is at a crossroads. Health care is becoming an emerging industry. Tourism is about to boom. We are now seeing seven million vehicles a year pass through Sundre. A second bridge is needed for this community ó not only to deal with the mess on Main Avenue, but also as importantly, to serve our thriving local and provincial commercial/industrial truck traffic better. How do we deal with massive proposed gravel extraction projects and yet maintain our current and important local production?
We currently have a trade area population of more than 8,000 people year round, and that does not include our seasonal and vacation property residents. We are looking to attract new business and industry so that young families and professionals will settle here. These are all issues to discuss and that is to name just a few.
Massive infrastructure projects are needed in the area, including a new regional wastewater plant that will have to service more than 20,000 people for long-term growth. The town and county need to form a working relationship that will benefit the entire community. That relationship currently does not exist.
Your vote and voice count like never before. Encourage your friends, neighbours and especially the young adults in your life to vote in our municipal election.
The next Town of Sundre candidates forum is tomorrow (Wednesday, Oct. 11) at the local legion starting at 6 p.m.
This just might be our most important municipal election ever.
