Let the light in

2016 has been a difficult year for many, and it doesn't take much to snuff out the joy of this season.

In this time of giving, we find ourselves instead tightening our belts apprehensively waiting for the carbon tax to come into play. As the NDP ad campaign faithfully reminds us, it comes Jan. 1. Suddenly New Year's celebrations and festivities don't seem so festive either. Unemployment in Alberta has soared to its highest level since 1994, reaching over nine per cent, and this is the New Year's reality for many of our friends and family.

Ho, ho, ho indeed.

However, love, hope and faith are the resounding messages of Christmas. Darkness is always forced to give way to light.

For example, the Fort McMurray wildfire triggered the largest financial response in Canadian history. There was instant, unfettered compassionate generosity given by thousands of Albertans, offering money, food, clothing, fuel and child care.

In spite of tragedy and anguish, there were tremendous, inspiring selfless acts of heroism, generosity and kindness.

When we sit down to our Christmas dinners, and gather with family and friends in the new year, let's take that response of love and generosity to heart. We are, after all, Albertans.

Let's be thinking of those less fortunate and be thankful for the many blessings we have. Taking it a step further, why not reach out to that neighbour who needs a helping hand or a word of encouragement?

The pain is raw and real for many at this time of year. A listening ear, or a shoulder to cry on might be the gift that lifts someone from depression. Even the smallest gesture goes a long way. Let's find a way to support local charities, food banks and shelters now facing increased demand and diminished donations.

The message of Christmas is giving and forgiving, so let's give without expecting something in return. Whether it's from our abundance or meagreness, material, emotional or spiritual, let's give wholeheartedly in love for each other.

From my staff and myself we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Don MacIntyre is the MLA for the Innisfail-Sylvan Lake riding.
