Letter: Real issues being sidelined by distractions like grizzly hunt

Letter writer asserts UCP government priorities completely out of step with needs of regular Albertans
opinion

Does anyone really feel like the grizzly bear situation is a real issue? Once again it seems that the UCP government is ignoring facts and officials' advice, and inventing numbers to their own end.

Why?

The only answer I can think of is to solidify the support of a segment of the population that wishes to be able to trophy hunt our grizzly bears.

Aren't we exterminating enough of them each year accidentally with our trains and vehicles? Problems caused in fact by our overpopulation and ongoing destruction of their natural habitats?

Wildlife Conservation officials' questions regarding the discrepancies in information are being ignored by this UCP government. They've said that the result of conservation efforts made over more than four decades will be reversed in a few seasons. For what reason? Because this UCP government is apparently unconcerned about what’s best for the province and happy to operate to its own perceived best interests. Without moral considerations.

The question Albertans need to ask is, why aren't they being held accountable for these transgressions and outright lies?

How inconceivable would it be for politicians to actually use their time to make tangible changes that could improve real issues negatively impacting our populations? Addressing the abysmal state of our health care, long-term care facilities, addiction, crime, the court system backlog, waste management, pollution, and more?

These real matters should be the top priorities.

But instead, they are winning votes with silly reckless short-term things that in fact have no positive impact on Alberta's future. Like open season on grizzlies, a new Saddledome…not to mention the fact that – only to stubbornly continue an idiotic head-butting battle with Ottawa – we are refusing to participate in any efforts to reduce our impact on climate change. The province is burning down and everyone sees that these extreme conditions are becoming the new normal.

Maybe the UCP finds the constant need for disaster relief payments a sustainable way to continue? How about saving your fake tears and doing a better job?

With any actual observation, it would be impossible not to see that there is significant room for reform within the oilpatch to clean up the way they're operating and be more efficient. Which, in fact, could generate jobs too!

Danielle Smith's priorities continue to be to pander to the loudest population, promising whatever they want, then lying and skimming over the ethical obligations to the rest of the public. She is ignoring the reality here in Alberta and the real perils our population is suffering.

The stupidity represented in these priorities is an enormous red flag, and I, for one, am fearful for the future consequences from having an apparent narcissist continue to be in power here. Alberta needs doctors and nurses to want to stay here. Better support systems for our citizens, the seniors and children, the environment; the future of our direct physical quality of life.

Alberta is burning down around us, literally and figuratively. Why aren't we making her answer for these things?

Tessa Smith,

Sundre
