Re: Commentary: Students never political pawns
I believe that there is nothing more important than giving students the opportunity of the best education that’s possible.
It should be important for any government to have that as the key take home of their legacy. Oh, there's always room for improvement. Yes, critical thinking should be in the curriculum. And we need to get over this teaching to the lowest denominator is a good considerate acceptable idea.
Or is this just a method of dumbing down the population so they’ll be easier to control by government? What in heck is wrong with recognizing the gifted and giving them an accelerated educational opportunity. And who better to know that than the teachers. Yes, all students need the basics of grammar and math but it's the gifted ones who are going to have to save this planet and our world.
For example like the high school student who developed an in-house drone bot to help disabled seniors to get their meds or shots as needed. He did that all on his own at home not what he learned in school. We need to encourage and develop more students like him. We shouldn't be holding them back and boring them to death to make the lower intelligence students feel better about themselves.
I think a lot of us survived the school systems in spite of their inadequateness for our learning needs. But I'm so thankful for the start it gave me, and all the doors of opportunity that my post-secondary education opened for me.
I sincerely hope that the problems with our education system can be fixed to enable the coming generations to live their dreams and make a positive contribution to society and to saving this world.
