Letter: Government has abandoned its promise

Emergency workers remain at risk despite new safety legislation, says letter writer
opinion

I am stunned and hugely disappointed by the government’s sudden decision to abandon the promises made to increase the safety for our emergency workers when responding to calls on our highways.

Months ago the government committed to changes that would require all lanes to slow down when passing emergency vehicles on our highways.  The implementation was delayed so that the public could become more aware of the change.

Now with only a few weeks notice, the Minister has announced that change will not be coming.

The most dangerous thing our emergency workers do is to respond to a situation on the highways with traffic racing by them with no regard for the flashing lights and the workers trying to save lives.

The government made a commitment to make these simple changes to help protect our emergency personnel and we believed them.

Now with little notice or explanation, the government has abandoned their promise continuing the danger to our emergency workers.
