Re: Letter: Put your money where your mouth is
Firstly, (the letter writer’s) suggestion that the creation of an Alberta Pension Plan would replace both the Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security. OAS, originally called the Old Age Pensions Act, is a federal program, introduced in 1927 and operated solely by the federal government.
The provinces joined the program sporadically. There is no plan to replace this program.
Secondly, the writer states that our provincial government has a “dubious record of managing our money.” While I can’t argue that point, I would ask how our federal government, whose leader says budgets will balance themselves, is managing our money? Certainly not any better and, I would suggest, far worse.
Many Albertans have said no to the creation of an APP. Many others have said yes. Perhaps it is time to look carefully at what is being proposed and to remember that Alberta cannot leave the CPP without proof that they will provide something at least as good.

On January 29, at the Didsbury multi purpose room, Gord Tulk, independent of the Alberta government, will be speaking to the creation of an APP.
I challenge anyone who has doubts or questions to come, listen, ask questions, then make a decision as to the merits of an APP, based on what they learn.
