Re: Racialized caricature of Singh and Trudeau makes Sundre parade go viral for wrong reasons

So Sundre finally made the national news. I hope the creators of the infamous “Liberal” float in the rodeo parade are proud of themselves, since Sundre can now join the rank of towns condemned by the press for racist, anti-immigrant or homophobic views.

I was gobsmacked when that float passed by me. It was in extremely bad taste: insulting, anti-democratic and racist. The folks around me seemed equally stunned – there was no laughter, whistles or applause, only silence.

How could the parade organizers not have known about this entry? I heard rumours weeks before the parade, but was certain the float would be disqualified.

And if the committee truly did not know about the float beforehand, it should have been scratched at the beginning of the parade. There should have been a committee member at the rallying point to head such embarrassments off at the pass.

Where does such insensitivity and disrespect come from? Social media and TV, presumably. I would suggest to the perpetrators of this nefarious display that they spend more time working on constructive criticism and genuine political activism, and less time on belligerent American websites.

Sandy Easterbrook,

Sundre
