Letter: Premier's tariff response was very weak and indecisive

I would advise Smith to choose wisely. All Albertans are watching her behaviour. The next election is only two years away.

Canada, including Alberta, is in a tariff war with its former ally, and now advisory, the U.S.A. This is an existential crisis for all Canadians/Albertans and requires our leaders to make transparent, strategic and timely decisions.

Since Donald Trump became president of the United States, our premier, Danielle Smith, has not demonstrated strong decisive leadership.

Her decision to visit Trump at his home in Florida has been seen by many of as an act of treason.

When Trump put tariffs on Canada, Smith’s strongest comment was that this action by Trump was “disappointing”.

Compared to other premiers and federal leaders, Smith’s response was very weak and indecisive.

Smith’s behaviours make me question her loyalty to Canada and Alberta. She acts like Wayne Gretzky did at the 4 Nations Face-off tournament. He gave thumbs up to the opposition and remained silent in cheering for Canada. He did not put on a Team Canada jersey.

The real question for Smith is whose team is she really on: Canada/Alberta or USA/Trump. Given a choice to wear a blue hat that says, “Canada is NOT for sale” or a red MAGA hat, which one would she wear?

I would advise Smith to choose wisely. All Albertans are watching her behaviour. The next election is only two years away.
