For the third year in a row, Bergen's Morton Burke had carved out an ice sculpture on his mother's front lawn, this time creating a polar bear and cub. "As always, lots of people have stopped to have a look," he said. Burke told the Round Up such a project required roughly five hours and 5,000 pounds of ice, which he obtained from a pond at his home. The tools of the trade include chainsaws, axes, knives and scrapers.

Town officials were planning a public meeting in February, and wanted to get the word out early to encourage groups and organizations to consider providing input for a survey to help determine future planning for the community. "We hope to involved the public in as wide a range of subjects affecting the quality of life in Sundre as possible," read a submission to the Round Up from the municipality. "Each organization is being asked to send a delegate to this meetingĂ–this survey is being done for your town, by our town."

Since New Year's Day, the Sundre and District Fire Department had responded to two rural chimney fires as well as a blaze in town that was caused by an overheated light at a northeast residence. On Friday, Jan. 1, the overheated ceiling light caused about $2,000 worth of damage at the residence, said Chief John Whitesell, adding the call came in around 9 p.m. That Sunday afternoon, at about 4:45 p.m., the department responded to a chimney fire at a rural property several kilometres southeast of town. Fortunately, the crew arrived quickly enough to prevent the blaze from consuming the entire house, Whitesell said. Then, just before 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 4, volunteer firefighters were dispatched to another chimney fire in a shop located on a residence a few kilometres northeast of Sundre. That incident caused minimal damage with a hole burned in the roof, the chief said.
