Many drivers had witnessed other motorists disregarding the flashing lights on a school bus, proceeding past the bus and placing students' lives in peril. There is no excuse, wrote the Round Up. The typical justifications heard were usually along the lines of “Didn't see it,” or “Thought it was leaving,” as well as “Couldn't see anyone on the road.” However, these excuses really translated into the fact that the driver was either travelling too fast, was impaired, distracted or exhibiting a callous carelessness. The Canada Safety Council had named the seven days from Sept. 23-30 as “School Bus Safety Week” throughout the country. During that time, school officials, bus operators and other organizations would be doing their part to ensure students were safe on their way to and from school.

More than 50 adults and children participated in the ninth annual Terry Fox Run in Sundre on Sept. 17. About $1,350 had been pledged to the worthy cause to raise money for the Canadian Cancer Society. Every year, the run had consistently become more successful than the last. In 1988, more than 350,000 people in Canada and around the world took part in a Terry Fox event, raising an accumulative total of close to $6 million — up from $4.1 million in 1987. Alberta had experienced a similar growth of this nature as about $487,000 was raised in 1988, which was up by approximately $100,000 over 1987. Terry Leslie, who had been organizing the local event since 1981, was pleased with the turnout — the largest in recent years — despite rainy weather.
