Mousseau will be missed

For anyone who had crossed paths with former Didsbury mayor Rick Mousseau, his loss is a tough one. Even though Rick had been sick for quite some time, his passing on Sept. 26 was still a shock.

For anyone who had crossed paths with former Didsbury mayor Rick Mousseau, his loss is a tough one. Even though Rick had been sick for quite some time, his passing on Sept. 26 was still a shock.

I first met Rick on my second or third day on the job as editor-reporter of the Didsbury Review back in 2016. We sat down for a get-to-know-you interview. I was quite stunned by how honest, friendly and warm he was. As a reporter, I've dealt with plenty of politicians at all levels. So many of them have big egos and their own agenda they try to force on you.

With Rick, there was none of that. After a year of council meetings, community appearances and more interviews, it quickly became clear to me that Rick was the real deal. He was the genuine article. He cared about the community and he cared about people.

He was also a dedicated and caring family man from all accounts. In addition, he spent almost 40 years volunteering with the Elks Club and 30 with the fire department.

To be honest, I wasn't really a close friend but when we chatted it felt like I was. I get the idea he treated everyone that way. Even as mayor of Didsbury, he took time out for everyone.

Even when Rick was clearly in pain and using a cane to get around, he still made it out to all the important community events as the mayor. I remember at the all-candidates forum for the last election when he had just had his leg amputated. He went up on stage in a wheelchair and participated as best he could.

Although he wasn't re-elected in 2017, Rick held his head up and moved forward.

All the time I knew him, he never, ever complained, even when he was in obvious pain and discomfort. He faced his illness with dignity and class. He always had a smile, kind word and often a funny quip.

Rick was such a positive, upbeat force for goodness, it's hard not to be inspired. He will be missed.
