New hockey team ownership group welcomed

Those in this community who aren't hockey fans can be forgiven for wondering why all the excitement over the state of the Olds Grizzlys Junior A hockey franchise.

Those in this community who aren't hockey fans can be forgiven for wondering why all the excitement over the state of the Olds Grizzlys Junior A hockey franchise.

But the possibility of that hockey team folding and leaving the community is not just an issue for hockey fans ñ or sports fans in general.

It's an issue for the community.

That's because the club brings money into Olds through its fan base. They stay in hotels and motels, and support minor hockey by purchasing food and drinks at the concession during hockey games.

That's an important factor at a time when the economy is suffering, due to low oil prices. We can use all the financial stimulus we can get.

So it's good news that a new ownership group has come forward, raising $500,000 to keep the team in Olds and cover its $321,579 debt.

Here's hoping the Alberta Junior Hockey League does indeed approve the change in ownership by the June 30 deadline and the province processes the ownership group's application for non-profit status.
