If you live in Innisfail, Olds, Bowden, Didsbury or Carstairs there's a good chance the newspaper you're reading was delivered by a carrier.
Carriers are a dedicated lot. They're responsible and, in most cases, very reliable. Without delivery, we've failed our readers, advertisers and ourselves. Fortunately, we've had long-term carriers of all ages who faithfully deliver every week. Many family members have passed routes to younger siblings.
The job must be done regardless of conditions: minus temperatures, rain, snow, mud and the odd disgruntled pooch. It teaches responsibility, time management, a work ethic and job satisfaction. Exercise and fresh air are a bonus.
How important is news delivery? A lapsed route will soon elicit several calls from disappointed news-hungry readers.
National Carrier Appreciation Day is Saturday, Oct. 7. It's a part of National Newspaper Week that runs Oct. 1-7. Thank you to all our hard-working newspaper carriers, and the people in the background who prepare the newspapers. I encourage you to share your gratitude as well.
