Weekend of Wheels with heart

It’s that time of year again. Summer is starting to wind down, kids are heading back to school and the Innisfail Weekend of Wheels returns.

This year, the two-day family event falls on Sept. 8 and 9.

For Saturday’s Show 'n' Shine, we are happy to include CCMR Performance Mobile Dyno and the Ladies Car Care Clinic on top of the awesome cars, merchandise and food vendors. It all takes place at John’s noFrills.

After investing countless hours and potentially crazy amounts of money on their vehicles, drivers will now have the chance to put them on a mobile dynamometer that will measure maximum horsepower and torque. Trophies will be awarded to the top horsepower vehicles in the classes of rear wheel drive, front wheel drive and diesel. Cost is only $120 for gas and $200 for diesel vehicles.

Sunday is the 100-foot shootout along 42nd Street in front of the Arena. Check out the separate article in today’s paper for additional details.

Shift gears (pardon the pun) from the show itself to the benefits of the event. The importance of the Weekend of Wheels comes to light. Similar to sports tournaments, events like this bring hundreds of spectators and participants from all over Central Alberta (and beyond) to our wonderful community.

These visitors may be coming to Innisfail for the first time and are unaware of the offerings within our town. Having the amenities in town to attract new families is critical to growth. For young families, the addition of a skatepark could be a deciding factor to move to Innisfail. Also, having this facility may be a reason to stay.

With the horseshoe club open to relocating, the town now has the opportunity to evolve the location from skatepark/horseshoe pits to an expanded gathering place. The additional area could allow for more green space, picnic tables and room for families to come together. Being centrally located, families can participate in swimming, tennis, baseball, soccer, horseshoes, playgrounds, splash park and the Innisfail and District Historical Village -- all within view of the skatepark.

This event couldn’t be successful without the tremendous support of our sponsors, volunteers, participants and spectators.

The Weekend of Wheels is the Kinsmen and Kinettes' primary fundraising activity for the Innisfail Skatepark. This joint effort is our commitment to working together with the goal of “Serving the Community's Greatest Needs."
