Seniors need safe and reliable transportation

I think it is time for the town to know how some seniors are being treated. I am 81 years young. I moved to Innisfail two years ago.

I think it is time for the town to know how some seniors are being treated.

I am 81 years young. I moved to Innisfail two years ago. Coming from Calgary to a smaller community was made easier for me once I discovered and started using the handivan service. I have used the service almost weekly, to and from doctor appointments, to the hospital for blood work and physio, groceries and even hair appointments.

As well, I initially used our local service to get to my Red Deer appointments. It has been over one whole year since a decision was made to stop all Red Deer trips due to the failing mechanical condition of the handivan.

I have no family members that live in this province. I also have a breathing condition, which limits the amount of walking I am able to do. How am I to get to locations without this service?

I book in advance to ensure I have transportation. However, in the past I have been notified that the handivan is not in service various days because of a safety issue with the extreme heat inside it (no air conditioning last summer -- this summer too?).

Now this past week again my transportation has been cancelled due to an electrical problem with the handivan.

I am very thankful new friends and church members have offered to help me when I am stranded. However, I am embarrassed to have to ask others, always at the last minute due to the unreliability of the handivan.

I read the local paper and see with my own eyes the pride in Innisfail, from beautiful hanging baskets to deluxe improvements of our town office, plus many amenities already present and in near-future plans for the enjoyment of both children and youth.

So who cares about the seniors and disabled? We understand nothing is for free and we want to pay our own way. I am certain there are many more residents in the exact same position as I am -- waiting for safe and reliable transportation. The Town of Innisfail would do well to have less committees and more decision-making that results in positive action.

Editor's note: The latest mechanical issue with the town's handivan was fixed last week and the vehicle was back in service on May 10. The town's adhoc Transportation Service Review Committee is meeting at 11 a.m. on May 17 at town hall to discuss future handivan options for the community.
