Skatepark an opportunity not a burden

It was with surprise and disappointment that I read your biased approach in the article, "Skatepark construction finally set to begin," in the July 9, 2019 issue of the Innisfail Province.

Letter writer wants the community to focus on the positive aspects of bringing a skatepark to Innisfail.

It was with surprise and disappointment that I read your biased approach in the article, "Skatepark construction finally set to begin," in the July 9, 2019 issue of the Innisfail Province.

While you accurately reported the facts with regard to the financing of the skatepark I object to your use of the phrase "taxpayers on the hook." This implies that taxpayers were not expecting to pay for the park and are now "stuck with a burden."

While it is true that initial financing ideas had the Innisfail Kinsmen and Kinette Club of Innisfail applying for a grant, I don't believe it was expected that these service clubs would take on the lion's share of project financing. The mayor's comments indicate that the cost and financial plan are reasonable and responsible for the project.

Rather than put a negative connotation to the financing of the project I believe it would be more appropriate to celebrate the start of construction as the initial steps in a worthwhile future orientated community project, which has been led by our mayor and council.

This park demonstrates that Innisfail has placed a high priority on young people, their families and the town's future while maintaining its commitments to seniors (i.e. relocation of the horseshoe pits). Hopefully, it will attract new families as well as give all citizens "pride in our past; faith in our future."

As the park construction continues and fundraising efforts needing community support increase, let us focus on the positive aspects of this opportunity for our youth. I look forward to articles in your paper in this regard.

W.R. Hoppins,

Innisfail
