Slow down and move over for tow trucks

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Key Towing & Storage from Red Deer for involving us in the “slow down and move over” rally on March 7.

The goal was to show travellers on our busy highways that tow trucks are also considered an emergency response vehicle. We work the highways daily and the amount of traffic travelling past us at highway speeds is a very scary situation that most are unaware of -- the close calls we face day to day.

I personally in the past year have almost been hit three times. It has become so bad that the people we are out there trying to help have gotten out of their vehicles and waited in the ditch as they are too scared to remain near their vehicles.

Like so many other Canadians who want to make it home safely and uninjured, I have a family that wants to see me make it home every day. Just because we do not have red or blue lights on our truck or are painted red with red lights makes us less important. We, as emergency responders, all work together to help others make it off the highways every day as well.

Most people who have to sit on the side of the road for any length of time have felt what we deal with every day. We have been told more than once we are crazy to be working on the highways. The scary thing to me is that we are not the only ones who are out there every day. Police, firefighters and road crews are all out there as well.

So to help people remember the fallen and the ones currently working the roads every day, Hookers Towing & Transport joined Key Towing & Storage on March 7 on the top of Antler Hill for an awareness  rally --  with lights and a display board on. The Antler Hill rally played a part with other locations and companies all along the QE II Highway to simply ask motorists to slow down and move over for all emergency vehicles and road crews. Our families and friends greatly appreciate it.

So please  -- slow down and move over.
