2016 was a tremendous year for partnerships in Red Deer County.

We have worked closely with farmers and businesses, and our urban neighbours, on major infrastructure projects, community enhancements, and protective services.

We have put funding agreements in place for community and economic growth opportunities, like upgrades to the Delburne Agriplex, a new community hall in Bowden, and sponsorship of the 2019 Canada Winter Games. Also, our continued partnership with the Red Deer Airport saw the runway expansion project recently completed, bringing new opportunities to the region.

Red Deer County had over $78 million worth of new development in 2016, and we are planning for continued growth into the future. The announcement of new grain facilities, a new seniors' care facility, and residential construction in Gasoline Alley are a few of the great opportunities coming to the county. Major development like this helps keep taxes low for the rest of the municipality. We are making use of our reserves to successfully take advantage of the lowest construction prices we have seen in 10 years to complete more planned capital projects. Historically, this is what we have done. Our reserves do fluctuate. They grow when times are good, and are put to use during tough economic times like these, taking advantage of great savings opportunities and keeping the tax burden low.

In 2016, major corridors like Rge. Rd. 10 were paved, two major bridge projects were completed, and sidewalks were poured in Gasoline Alley. A new reservoir and water treatment plant in Spruce View will go a long way to improve quality of life for residents.

Our continued focus on agriculture in 2016 included weed control, maintenance of our municipal areas, and rewarding farmers, through ALUS Canada funding, for providing ecosystem services. Our Ag Services Board ensures that agriculture and rural life remain a priority. We are excited to host the province in the summer of 2017 on a showcase tour of our outstanding agriculture industry. Red Deer County is in a very enviable position, with reserves in the bank, zero tax rate increases in 2016 and 2017, award-winning financial reporting, and strong economic development strategy. We will be debt free with the recently approved 2017-2019 Operating and 2017-2021 Capital budgets.

Red Deer County remains prudent with taxpayer dollars, while recognizing the need for high-quality service to the public.
