Things that go bump in the night

Since time immemorial, stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and family to family about those whose ghostly existence is a matter of fact, and fear.

Since time immemorial, stories have been passed down from generation to generation, and family to family about those whose ghostly existence is a matter of fact, and fear.

Just as with UFOs and extraterrestrials, the existence of ghostly beings, spectres, phantasms, and shadow people, there is much information, and even more mis-information available on the Internet and bookstore shelves.

Every family has a ghost story somewhere in their past.

I can remember my uncle and cousins trying to scare the dickens out of three young impressionable boys by telling us about a cabin in the woods in the St. Brieux area in Saskatchewan where a trap door in the kitchen would be banged by an unseen presence. To this day, I do not know if the story was true, but it lodged in my psyche a curiosity for ghost stories.

There are several good books that chronicle ghost stories from north Texas all the way to northern Alberta. Tales of headless ghosts, wandering white dressed girls pace the halls of many buildings in England. We cannot forget the plethora of “research” books into ghosts that deal with pseudo-scientific methods of detection and communication.

One thing is sure, ghost stories are big business, and more importantly, the driving force behind the growth of the industry is the question we all want to ask.

Are ghosts real?

The issue of credibility in our digital world of ghost photographs with Photoshop so readily available is one that is struggled with. Be it video or still images, photos can be manipulated.

It has been said that there are things in this world we do not understand, that there are things better left unsaid and unwitnessed.

It may be the same with hauntings.

I have seen ghosts. I have been in the presence of spirits. I have heard “voices.” I have also photographed orbs in those same places. My brother and his friend overheard a ghostly game of pool in a disturbed church, and were witness to balls rolling that were pushed by unseen hands.

I believe ghosts are real.

What makes a “real” sighting?

There is nothing like a first-hand experience to turn a skeptic into a believer. Will anyone else believe what I saw or experienced? Not likely. If it happens to you, and you personally witnessed the spirit, things are different.

What are ghosts?

They might be spirit, or they might be energy. One sure way to tell you are in an area with spirits is the rapid drop of temperature. Modern ghost theorists tell us that they draw energy from the air to materialize or to move an object, hence a temperature drop.

Are they long dead beings with unfinished business? Are they benevolent or malevolent?

From what I have read and seen, spirits can be either good or bad, just like people. They can be mischievous, devious and dangerous.

Ghostly encounters are real, and happen everywhere, and are not time dependent. We will investigate the basics of ghost sightings, relate some real sightings and discuss how to deal with them.
