Time to be thankful

Our little neck of the woods is becoming a bit more hectic now that spring has finally sprung. May 11-13 saw another excellent Didsbury Car Club Show 'n Shine, which expanded over an amazing three days.

Our little neck of the woods is becoming a bit more hectic now that spring has finally sprung.

May 11-13 saw another excellent Didsbury Car Club Show 'n Shine, which expanded over an amazing three days. The newly minted Fuel-A-Palooza was a great success.

Almost 500 cars registered and several thousand people descended on downtown Didsbury to check out the vehicles and the many events.

The week before Didsbury was the star of a Space/Netflix TV series as crews from Wynonna Earp rode into town to film for a day.

Although it's the third year for the Wynonna Earp crew in Didsbury, it's still neat for residents to catch a look at the crew and the cameras and the sets and maybe catch a glimpse of one of the stars.

Down the road in Carstairs, there is plenty to do as well. On Friday, residents had a great time at the Carstairs Neighbourhood party at the arena. The party featured food vendors, service clubs, sports organizations, community groups and more all in one place.

With warmer spring weather comes outdoor sports. In Carstairs, Cremona and Didsbury on almost any evening you can drive by one of the many fields around and see youngsters playing soccer or baseball. Of course, for the older folks there is slo-pitch and golf at one of the many nice courses around.

It's great to be able to cover good news. As responsible journalists we have to cover the bad stuff that happens as well as the good. There has been far too much bad news recently with the Humboldt Broncos bus crash as well as severe flooding in my former hometown of Grand Forks and many other communities in B.C.

It's events like that and the forest fires of three years ago that I helped cover that displaced hundreds if not thousands from their homes. With the floods wreaking havoc on downtown Grand Forks causing destruction of both businesses and homes, thousands have been evacuated in the last couple of weeks.

So does that mean we should all panic and run screaming into the woods? No. But it doesn't hurt to be somewhat prepared and have a bag ready with some essentials that you can grab in case of a quick evacuation.
