Town enters policing agreement

DIDSBURY - Council has agreed to enter into a municipal police services agreement with the RCMP.

DIDSBURY - Council has agreed to enter into a municipal police services agreement with the RCMP.

The agreement will see the RCMP provide its policing services effective April 2020, which would include four RCMP members dedicated to policing the Town of Didsbury.

The background information states that in 2020, the town will be responsible for RCMP policing costs after reaching a population of over 5,000 in the last (2016) census.

In other council news, council carried a motion to award the tender for the 20th Avenue sanitary sewer rehabilitation project to Insituform Technologies from Edmonton, the only company that submitted a bid.

The background information states that the project involves cleaning, bypass pumping, new 300mm sanitary lining and video inspection and should be completed in 10 days. The cost for the project is an estimated $240,000.

Greg Skotheim, manager of public works and infrastructure for the Town of Didsbury, said the project is important as it will extend the life of the existing sanitary pipe significantly.

Skotheim said the project will begin in early December and be completed by Dec. 21.

Jeff Hangar of the Red Deer River Watershed Alliance (RDRWA) appeared before council as a delegation. He said the alliance would like the Town of Didsbury to become a member of the organization, which is a multi-sector, non-profit organization that promotes the good use and proper management of water within the Red Deer River watershed.

Hangar's report was accepted as information.

Meanwhile, council approved the use of Mountain View County-Town of Didsbury small capital reserve for the town's portion of repairs for a fire department pumper truck, which suffered equipment failure in September of 2017. The total cost of the repair was $67,417.16.

The portion of the pumper repairs and temporary rental of a replacement unit would be $36,708.58 for the town.
