Valiant Five play praised by local resident

The highlight of my Canada Day was the play The Valiant Five, presented in the gazebo. It was an excellent presentation of history by five very talented women, spearheaded by former Olds resident Mary Hays.

Actors, including former Olds resident, playwright and storyteller Mary Hays perform The Valiant Five in the Centennial Park Gazebo. It’s a play about five Alberta women who launched a campaign which eventually resulted in women being declared “persons.”

We are so fortunate to have the fruits of such great talent presented in our area.

And it gives pause to think that only 90 years ago, women were not legally persons in Alberta. We can thank the Valiant Five for their work when they weren't even considered persons.

In Canada, women were not declared "persons" under Canadian law until Oct. 18, 1929, as a result of a campaign by five Alberta women — Emily Murphy, Nellie McClung, Irene Parlby, Louise McKinney and Henrietta Muir Edwards.Ed.
