CHARLOTTETOWN — The world's longest running annual musical theatre production, "Anne of Green Gables – The Musical," will not be staged next year during the Charlottetown Festival.
The Confederation Centre of the Arts announced today that from now on the production will be staged every two years.
The musical will next return in 2024 for the 150th birthday of Lucy Maud Montgomery, author of the famous book upon which the show is based.
As well, a new agreement with the play's rights holders will allow it to be performed in other markets when it is not being presented at the Charlottetown Festival.
The musical was staged every year from 1965 to 2019, earning it recognition from Guinness World Records.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced a two-year pause, but the musical returned this year.
“The story of Anne is an integral part of Prince Edward Island culture, and we want to assure the public that it will return to the stage for years to come,” Confederation Centre CEO Centre CEO Steve Bellamy said in a news release.
