Winter camping is not for everybody. People might be surprised to learn just how many destination options are out there. If you love camping in the winter, you've likely got some go-to hot spots in your back pocket. But there's something to be said for switching it up every once in a while. We've rounded up a little list of three wonderful places to go winter camping in Alberta. So, if you're interested in a pleasant, relaxing camping experience in what most people call the "off-season," you're in luck; these places are awesome. Here's what you need to know!
Whirlpool Winter Hub & Camping
This gorgeous place is 22 km from the Jasper townsite along Highway 93A. There is over 25 km of groomed cross-country ski trails and some breathtaking views along the way. There is also a cooking shelter, firewood, and pit toilets for visitors, even if they aren't camping overnight. Winter camping is available from November 1st, 2022 to March 15th, 2023, and the campsites are first-come, first-served. There are sites for RVs and tents, and they are all self-registration. You'll find a wood stove and picnic tables in the campground's warming hut. While there aren't showers or services, there is a whole lot of fun to be had.
Gregg Lake Campground
We've got another beauty for you! Gregg Lake Campground is located in William A. Switzer Provincial Park, just 3 km West of Hinton. The huge campground is perfect for both RVs and tents. You'll find all types of campsites, including unserviced, powered, power/water. And pull-through options. Winter camping is available from October 11th to May 17th, though only a fraction of the sites are operational. So, you'll want to book ahead of time. The area is truly stunning, with trees everywhere, a lake, playgrounds, tons of walking trails, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing, and more.
Elkwater campground
This lovely campground is located in Cypress Hills Provincial Park, 20 km from Medicine Hat. There are plenty of sites, about 80 of which are RV-friendly. There is a beautiful forest where you'll find most of the sites. If you're looking for power or water hookups, you'll find them here. Winter camping is available on some sites, and there are some amazon amenities to get excited about. There's a cooking shelter, horseshoes, firepits, a picnic shelter, showers, flush toilets, a playground, and more. Nestled in the rolling hills, this place is quite stunning.
