Ol’berta Grill House and Bar Room: The Place for Beef

Local farms provide the salad ingredients, vegetable, potatoes and onions on the menu.

There is a great ol’ restaurant here in Didsbury! If you haven’t been here yet, it’s called the Ol’berta Grill House and Bar Room and it’s got a real Alberta menu! That means big portions of locally farmed foods, and grass-fed local beef. It means country style, cowboy food.

With the connection to the local farms in the Didsbury area, the dining is an Alberta experience, and a place where everyone can gather and enjoy the best of what the province has to offer. The restaurant has a good selection of premium beef, a symbol of Alberta’s agricultural heritage. Atmosphere matters, some customers come here for that, and some come for a big meal with big portions!

Take a look at the menu. “None of the food is artificial, and that is what makes us stand out,” says head chef and owner Chathura Weerasekara. “Nobody else does this, and even though it may cost more, we do it because we believe quality food is important. We’ve got plenty of steak, grass fed beef, bison, elk, real cowboy burgers.”

Local farms provide the salad ingredients, vegetable, potatoes and onions on the menu.

Weerasekara loves his role as the owner of a steak restaurant in the heart of ranch land Alberta, and it is his culinary skills, experience and his vision that has made this restaurant a success.

“When we opened, it was just a small place. We built it up and now we are always busy. I have lived and worked in restaurants all over the world and in Canada, but I am grateful for the move to Alberta. This is a province where one can succeed. It’s easy to express yourself and build your dream.”

Weerasekara feels that consistency is also a factor in the restaurant’s success.

“I have been in this business a long time and the most important thing is that there should not be surprises. People come for the food that they know. The food is consistent; it is the same and that is comforting. Memories are created here.”

Chef Weerasekara has built a lot of memories for himself through his 25 years of experience that have allowed him to create a restaurant of which to be proud. He has worked in Michelin Star restaurants in Dubai, the UK, and Sri Lanka. He thanks his mentors, who have encouraged him.

“I am looking forward to achieving many things in this town and making Ol’berta as great as it can be. I also have plans to expand and open a similar restaurant in a nearby town.”
