Sundre & District Museum: Far More than Meets the Eye

The humble collection of historic buildings and artifacts at the Sundre & District Museum only shows part of the story. Between the walls of each structure is a rich and beautiful narrative. When you visit, you get to be part of the past, present and future all at once.

Jane Atkins, Board Chair, is excited about the upcoming summer programs, the arrival of camps, and the many ways locals and tourists can enjoy the museum.

“Kids camps have arrived, post-COVID,” Atkins shares. “In our camps, we bring the kids back to the pioneer ways of doing things. The children wear pioneer costumes and enjoy a full immersion experience. The summer students have an opportunity to become site interpreters, learning how the museum works behind the scenes, participating in collections and helping to set up brand new exhibits.” For more information and to register please email the museum.

Summer Camps for Kids

Camps are arranged by age groups and will include a variety of activities (weather and age dependent) that may include rope making, candle making and planting a garden. Children aged 4-6 year old enjoy half-day camp two days a week. A healthy snack is provided. Older children enjoy full days Monday-Friday starting at 9 am and are required to bring a lunch.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Think summer programs at the Sundre Museum are just for kids? Think again! The seniors in the community will have an exciting opportunity to share their stories on film. A New Horizons grant through the Government of Canada allows the museum to make use of the vintage projectors, theatre seating and other historic theatre items in their collection. Add in a youth behind the camera and a senior regaling the lens about the good old days, and you have movie magic for the whole community to enjoy. This program is under development, so stay tuned to the museum’s Facebook page for future details.
