Have you ever wondered if online learning is right for you? If you’re a busy person, with a full-time job and personal commitments, it may be the ideal way to achieve your educational goals and it is not as intimidating as it may seem.
Here’s what Continuing Education graduate Britt had to say about her experience. “I actually prefer to learn online. Managing full-time work and kids’ activities, it would be next to impossible for me to complete my certificate otherwise.” Britt took the HR Management certi cate to help prepare herself for a new role in human resources. “I built my class and study time into my schedule so it was easy for me to keep up with the readings and to participate in the discussion boards. You have to put in the work anyway, and I loved the convenience.”
Britt also found that her instructors were, “warm and welcoming. They really want you to learn.” And forming relationships in the online classroom is not as difficult as it may seem. “You see some of the same names over again as you go through your courses. Even though you will never meet this person, it still felt like a real learning community.” Kristin is a teacher and when her husband was stationed in the U.S. for two years, she found it to be the perfect time to work on her certificate in Career and Academic Advising.
Having taught in the classroom for 20 years, she felt it was time to pursue a different angle of the teaching profession and completed the certificate totally online. “The transition from a regular classroom to an online classroom was fairly easy. The learning tool is very straight forward.” And her instructors made it enjoyable to be online. “All my instructors provided excellent resources and were readily available when I had questions or concerns, and answered promptly.”
At UCalgary Continuing Education online courses are interactive and instructor-led. For most courses, students work within scheduled start and end dates, and observe set timelines for learning activities and assignments but are free to choose when they go online.
There is only one requirement for enrolling in Continuing Education courses: students must be 18 years of age or older.
