For starters, Sundre boasts the best groomed trails in the region for cross-country skiing, fat biking, and winter walks. A mix of paved pathways and forested nature trails allow enthusiasts at all skill levels to safely enjoy the trails. “Sundre boasts 27 kilometres of trails and pathways in town, of which an estimated 10 are groomed by the Sundre Bike n Ski Club for cross-country skiing and fat biking,” says Jon Allan, Economic Development Officer. “Most of the trails are located in highly picturesque settings on our Riverside trail system, and on our beautifully forested Snake Hill Recreation Area. Snowshoeing is a popular activity too, particularly on Snake Hill.”
Looking for something with a little more adrenaline? How about tearing down a tobogganing hill on Snake Hill that can only be described as epic? Years ago it was a bobsled course, but today it’s used to test your wits against a slick and thrilling downhill slide.
Not enough adrenaline for you yet? Well then challenge yourself with a snowmobile adventure. A well-developed system of snowmobile routes can be found just west of town. You can bring your own sled or rent one at a local business like Mountains Edge Cycle & Sled.
“While exploring the Riverside, visitors are encouraged to stop in at Greenwood Park and see the beautiful gazebo. Featuring free-to-use fire pits, guests are welcome to warm up and enjoy the scenery,” adds Allan of how to keep toasty while enjoying the many winter activities.
Another way to warm up is to pop into the area’s unique boutiques and get a head start on Christmas shopping. From amazing Greek food at Piros Restaurant, to the ultra-classy atmosphere (yet ultra-affordable menu) at the newly revamped diner at the historic Sundre Hotel, to home-cooked meals at Swamp Donkeys Pub, Sundre is also home to a surprisingly good selection of restaurants and pubs. Cedar’s Pub has 18 beers on tap. Kodiak BBQ Deli has some of the best barbeque in the region. And Original T’s lives up to its reputation as a place to get massive portions of great meals. There are many others to take your pick from, too, to fuel your outdoor adventures.
The Sundre area has a strong cultural scene too. The Sundre Pioneer Village Museum & the World of Wildlife is home to an impressive collection of taxidermy animals from around the world, while its grounds feature a host of historic pioneer buildings located right in Sundre’s Historic Riverside Area. Peaceful moments can be spent enjoying the extensive marble sculptures carved by artists from around the world at Bergen Rocks International Sculpture Park. And people are invited to learn more about indigenous culture and living by visiting Painted Warriors Ranch.
The Sundre area has a special activity you won’t find anywhere else. Open to the public by appointment only, the Wild Horses of Alberta Society (WHOAS) rescues, handles, and rehabilitates wild horses that have been injured or abandoned.
