SUNDRE – The capacity for an annual golf tournament fundraiser for an organization that endeavours to lift barriers for youth to access sports regardless their financial situation at home was once again maxed out.
“We just had one team that got called away at work” at the last minute, said Nicky Vardas, event organizer of the Play 4 Sundre Kidz golf tournament.
But otherwise, Vardas said 144 players had registered, representing 36 teams of four.
The event was held on Saturday, July 20 at the Coyote Creek Golf & RV Resort, which has hosted the fundraiser since the inaugural event in 2017.
“It was super, super hot (but) we all survived,” she said.
“I think everybody had a good time … it’s always just a fun tournament.”
And although the roughly two dozen items that were donated for the charitable event by local businesses and people in the community “was a little bit lower this year,” Vardas said approximately $15,000 was raised.
Among the bigger ticket items was a large, custom-made fire pit from Dale Aldrich, while Marc Gamelin offered up four pressure washers.
Last year’s event marked a major milestone with one lucky player winning a $10,000 prize after sinking a hole in one.
As fate would have it, there would be no repeats of such a feat this year.
A lot of work goes into preparing the event, but “it’s worth it,” said Vardas, who was next looking forward to going on a bit of a summer break with her family after chatting with the Albertan.
