Annual art show and sale in Sundre attracts hundreds

Sundre West Country Centre hosts 14 artists who presented a total of 149 paintings

SUNDRE – Organizers of a local art show and sale that is hosted annually at the Sundre West Country Centre were happy to report a good turnout.

“We were really quite pleased,” said Lila Weiss, Sundre Creative Arts vice-president.

The annual show and sale, which this year had the theme of Wild Skies, was held April 27-28.

“We had 14 artists participating and we had 149 paintings displayed,” said Weiss, adding all but six of the pieces were up for sale.

Linda Rae, a Calgary resident who also has a cabin in Bergen Springs, said she always looks forward to dropping by the centre for the group’s annual show and sale.

“I’m an artist myself, so I appreciate these events,” said Rae, who made note of a couple of paintings she was interested buying.

Rae was among the more than 250 people that organizers reported coming by throughout both days.

“We sold 40 paintings, which was tremendous,” said Weiss, adding that was up a little bit from recent years.

With another show and sale wrapped up for the record books, the arts group is largely expecting to go on a bit of a summer hiatus.

“Once in a while, we go out for a plein air painting,” she said, referring to an outdoor session.

“But generally we just take the summer off.”

Before taking a break, however, the group also plans to meet in May to begin brainstorming potential plans for next year, which represents a major milestone.

“We’ll start planning for our 50th anniversary,” she said, adding no firm decisions have yet been made and that plans very much remain in the early, idea-generating stage.

“We’re just starting to discuss some ideas to promote it and give back a little bit to some of the area,” she said.

“We’d like to welcome more artists to join our group,” she said.
