Back alley now officially one way

A Sundre councillor recently shared concerns some residents have expressed regarding the new one-way back alley between Second and Third streets NW.

Coun. Chris Vardas said although directional one-way traffic signs have been installed, some drivers do not seem to have taken heed, resulting in a number of near collisions.

The flow of traffic in that alley should now run eastward from the western entrance on Third Street. Motorists turning into the alley from the multiple business accesses are expected to exit by turning eastbound and finally exiting onto Second Street.

The councillor told his colleagues during the regular Jan. 30 meeting that he's heard a request for bylaw enforcement to police as well as help people realize the alley is now one-way.

"When they (drivers) come out of some of the businesses there, they just zoom right out because it's habit," he said.

"A couple of people almost got hit."

Coun. Myron Thompson said even he'd experienced a couple of close calls already.

Vardas asked administrative staff to direct the community peace officer to keep an eye on the back alley "for a while, just to get people used to the fact."
