Concerned residents clean up piles of garbage

A group of concerned Sundre residents got together last week to clean up piles of garbage that had been dumped under a “no dumping” sign at the Sundre recycling centre.

More than 500 kilograms of garbage was taken to the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission waste transfer station on Oct. 31.

Sundre resident Kim Free posted a photo on the Sundre and Area Buy and Sell Facebook page showing the piles of garbage. The post attracted about 35 comments from concerned residents.

“I was concerned because I heard that another recycling centre shut down because of similar troubles,” said Free.

“I didn't want Sundre to lose its recycling centre.”

After rummaging through the piles of garbage, she found an identification card belonging to a Sundre resident, which she plans to pass on to the community peace officer.

After seeing the post on Facebook, Sundre resident Adrian Goddard volunteered to help clean up the garbage and brought his trailer to the site to take loads to the waste transfer station. Sundre resident Karen McIntyre, who is also a teacher at the Sundre Learning Centre, organized a group of students to help as well.

Free said the volunteers filled the trailer with garbage, including an old refrigerator, television, washing machine, furniture and a typewriter.

Officials of the Mountain View Regional Waste Management Commission waived the fees at the transfer station, she noted.

“It truly is a success story of a number of individuals and organizations responding in a positive way to social media and then working together to improve and take care of our community.”
