Cooking for Kindness takes hiatus to deliver Christmas meal in Sundre

Monthly luncheon usually held third Wednesday of the month at Sundre legion will instead be hosted on Christmas Day

SUNDRE – Usually held on the third Wednesday of the month, the Cooking for Kindness luncheon will be taking a hiatus in December with organizers instead preparing plans for a Christmas Day meal.

The Royal Canadian Legion Sundre Branch #223 hosts the monthly Cooking for Kindness luncheons, which are the result of an organizational effort driven largely by Lourelle Vooys.

However, Vooys takes little to no credit for the initiative and instead heaps praise on the outpouring of love and support from the community – everyone from the helping hands who serve the meals and clean up the hall after to the restaurants that contribute dishes – that makes the luncheon possible.

“The teamwork is just fantastic in Sundre,” said Vooys.

The monthly Cooking for Kindness luncheons provide not only an opportunity for people to enjoy a satisfyingly affordable meal for only $10, but also a chance to bump elbows and socialize with others over a good conversation even after everyone at the table is done eating.

Vooys said there won’t be a regular Cooking for Kindness next month as there instead will be the Christmas Day luncheon, which will run from noon to 3 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 25. Although that meal will be available at no charge, Vooys said donations will be accepted.

Additionally, anyone who might be interested in the meal but as a result of mobility issues or other complications might not be able to attend in person, may request a delivery that can be arranged, she said, adding community members who want to volunteer are also welcome.

All inquiries about the Cooking for Kindness luncheon as well as the Christmas Day dinner may be directed to Vooys, who can be reached by calling 403-638-3378.
