SUNDRE – With “very minor changes” to the municipality’s updated quality management plan, the town continues to maintain five out of nine provincial safety codes disciplines.

Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, told council during the regular Sept. 18 meeting about the annual audit of the municipality’s fire, building, electrical, gas and plumbing disciplines that are governed by the plan.

The Safety Codes Council audits Alberta’s safety codes system in administering its responsibilities and duties under the Safety Codes Act. Audits provide an objective and unbiased assessment of performance, effectiveness, and risk associated with the province’s safety codes system, reads a portion of the background in council agenda package.

“The audits are observations of the safety codes system and those providing services within it, measured against legislative requirements, policies and directives of the Safety Codes Council as well as industry best practice,” it reads in part.

“Signing onto the quality management plan is a commitment to the province of Alberta that we will uphold Alberta’s safety codes system through our permitting system,” Nelson told council, adding the previous plan was drafted in 2018.

“Since that time, there have been some updates to the building codes and fire codes, and those are reflected in our quality management plan,” she said, adding any amendments require council approval.

“It’s just amazing to me that we qualify for as many designations,” said Coun. Jaime Marr, adding the document reaffirms how stringent the rules are pertaining to planning development that the municipality must follow.

Mayor Richard Warnock sought clarification with regards to the process of appointing a quality management plan manager.

“I am the quality management plan manager and I do oversee our quality management plan,” replied Nelson, adding the role includes a number of responsibilities such as ensuring training is up to speed for municipal employees who are accredited to issue permits as well as completing the annual audit.

Council proceeded to approve the new plan – which is available in full in the meeting’s agenda package on the town’s website – as presented.
