Heffernan-Shippy appointed to library board

Council appointed local woman Melissa Heffernan-Shippy to the Sundre Municipal Library Board after she made the request last month.

In a letter to council, she mentioned that she was encouraged to join the board by two acting members.

The letter states that as part of the board, she intends to help with promoting new ideas to increase the use of the library by the younger generation.

“I am interested in working on the board to come up with new ideas and visions by offering alternative ways to connect with the community, while still promoting the value of literacy in the new age of technology,” she expressed in the letter.

She has served on the board of an artist-run centre in Calgary, known as the Quickdraw Animation Society.

As a board member, she participated in a workshop about enhancing organization, communication and vision, she said.

Her request to become a member of the board was approved during the March 18 council meeting.

Town pays for GNP member to attend conference

One member of Greenwood Neighbourhood Place (GNP) will be attending an upcoming conference, as granted by council.

During the March 18 meeting, council voted to allocate up to $1,000 from the town's legislative budget to cover the costs.

GNP members made this request as they were also approved to attend the conference in 2012.

The three-day conference, known as Vitalize 2013, is a provincial voluntary sector conference, which will take place in Edmonton this June.

It will cover a range of topics including fundraising, board development, leadership, stress management and volunteer management.

Allocation of remaining 2012 funds

Unused funds from the 2012 budget were allocated during the council meeting on March 18.

Remaining money from the 2012 wastewater treatment study has been allocated to use in 2013 in continuing the project.

A total of $64,800 was allocated for the project in 2012, 100 per cent funded by tax dollars.

The remaining amount of the funds that have been allocated is $38,262.96.

Also, a total of $73,723.99 was allocated to the water/wastewater reserve to use in 2013 for the master infrastructure study.

In addition, $3,964.09 was allocated from the MSI operating grant to the 2013 roads budget to also be used for the master infrastructure study.

When the project was approved in the 2012 budget for $121,800, the plan was for $45,000 to be spent from the MSI operating grant and the rest to be paid for by tax dollars.

A total of $44,111.92 was spent in 2012, leaving $77,688.08 to be used in 2013.

Dales appointed to MPC

Robert Dales was appointed as a member of the Municipal Planning Commission (MPC) during the March 18 meeting.

Six public members were appointed to the commission in September, but one was recently disqualified for missing three consecutive meetings.

A need for a sixth member led to the appointment of Dales.

His membership will be from March until the 2013 organizational meeting of council.

He was appointed after writing a letter to council expressing his interest in the development of the community.

Library receives quarterly payments

Council voted to pay the Sundre Municipal Library in quarterly payments effective this year and in following years, rather than twice a year.

A total of $96,596 has been approved in the 2013 budget for the library, and will be paid from the town's recreation and culture funding.

The library will receive payments in March, June, September and December this year, council decided at the March 18 meeting.

In following years, they will receive payments in March, July, September and December.
