Boys rink from Didsbury, girls team from Sundre, and mixed squad from Carstairs qualified during curling games hosted in Cremona

SUNDRE – Three high school curling teams from the region recently qualified to compete at the upcoming south central zones being hosted by Cochrane.

Cremona High School hosted several teams from the area this past Friday, Jan. 19.

There were boys teams from Didsbury, Cremona and Olds, with Didsbury emerging in first place while Cremona placed second.

There were also mixed teams from Carstairs and Cremona that went head-to-head, with Carstairs notching out a victory.

Earlier in the week, the Sundre Curling Club had also hosted on Tuesday, Jan. 16 a game between the Sundre high and Olds high schools teams, with Olds winning that round in what proved to be a close match decided by one point with a final score of 6-5.

In Cremona on Friday, the teams that qualified to move onto south central zones in Cochrane on Feb. 7-8 were the boys rink from Didsbury High School, the girls team from Sundre High School, and the mixed squad from Hugh Sutherland School in Carstairs, said Rob Scott, coach of Cremona’s curling team.

“Those were the top teams,” he said during a follow-up. “We’ll see if there’s any wild card positions that get to go, but we won’t know that until later.”

The Sundre Curling Club will also be hosting the U15 provincials south qualifier on Feb. 1-4.
