LEARNING ABOUT LIGHTNING — Gracie Atkinson, a Grade 5 student at River Valley School whose science fair project called How Does Lightning Form? earned her a first-place ribbon, explains to her grandmother Sandra Killaby, a Sundre resident, what she learned during her experiments that explored static electricity. “I like to present,” Atkinson said during the school’s fair on Feb. 1. “It’s just a lot of fun.” All of the students who placed first and second, as well as those who received honourable mentions, will be invited to the Mountain View Science and Technology Society’s fair at Olds High School on Saturday, March 2.

River Valley School students who are passionate about pursuing the path of exploring knowledge recently had the opportunity to present their projects during the annual science fair.

“It allows students to explore and showcase their scientific skills and knowledge for their peers and community,” said Grade 3 teacher Michelle Hindbo, adding they were excited to discuss what they had learned.

Held on Friday, Feb. 1, the fair featured nearly 50 projects put together by almost 60 students from kindergarten to Grade 8. After each presentation was judged, the doors at the school’s gym opened to the public for anyone who wanted to view the students’ work, said Hindbo.

“The science fair provides River Valley School another opportunity to connect with the community,” she said, expressing appreciation for all of the volunteers and members of the public “who come to support our young scientists.”

The top three projects from each grade will have the chance to participate in the upcoming Mountainview Science and Technology Society Science Fair, which takes place Saturday, March 2 at Olds High School. Students who qualify at that fair will also be extended an invitation to attend the Central Alberta Regional Science Fair in Red Deer later in March, she said.

“This year we were really pleased with how many students entered projects and how many community volunteers came out to judge their projects.”
