SUNDRE – Dreary conditions throughout the unofficial kickoff to the camping season seems to have kept things fairly quiet over the May long weekend.
“I think due to the weather, a fairly quiet long weekend,” said Sgt. Randy Poon, Sundre RCMP detachment commander, in response to questions about how things went.
Poon provided the Albertan with a recap of RCMP activities in the department’s jurisdiction from Friday, May 17 to Monday, May 20.
Among the highlights noted by the sergeant were:
• a couple reports of lost pets;
• a reported fight at a campsite that did not result in charges being laid;
• a couple of break and enters west of Sundre that remain under investigation;
• a trailer was reported stolen in Bearberry;
• a couple of complaints about firearms being discharged that were subsequently deemed legal with no charges laid;
• several noise complaints on Saturday and Sunday;
• a single motor vehicle collision north of Sundre within the Clearwater County boundary involving a dirt bike whose rider suffered a broken collar bone;
• a motor vehicle collision on Range Road 60-61 west of Sundre that did not result in serious injuries;
• a hit and run east of Sundre on Highway 27 that is still under investigation;
• an impaired motorist in the town of Sundre who is said to be from Calgary was issued fines under the Provincial Sanctions;
• and off-highway vehicle patrols in the Panther River and Burnstick Lake areas resulted in stopping around 30 people on ATVs, but no violations were reported.
The break and enters were discovered on the morning of May 17 in the Wimbledon subdivision in Clearwater County on an acreage with cabins, said Poon, adding the incident was reported twice when the owner discovered other cabins were entered as well.
The hit and run was reported at about 6 p.m. on May 18 as having occurred right in Sundre at 1st Avenue SW. The suspect vehicle – a green Ford F250 hauling a trailer carrying two side-by-sides – was reported to have continued onto Highway 27 in an eastbound direction and eventually south to Highway 22, he said.
Residents with any information about these or other incidents are encouraged to contact the Sundre RCMP's complaint line at 403-638-3655. Alternatively, information may also be provided anonymously by contacting Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS), online at www.P3Tips.com or by using the P3 Tips app available through the Apple App or Google Play Store.
The situation was even more quiet over at the Sundre Fire Department, whose members didn’t have so much as a false smoke alarm throughout the whole long weekend.
“We had one medical assist call and we were stood down when we got there,” said Chief Ross Clews, adding that response occurred late on Sunday morning west of town in Mountain View County.
“It was very quiet and very nice,” he said when asked how the weekend compared with the average May long.
