Ducks race down Bearberry Creek in support of Sundre Aquaplex

Sundre & District Aquatic Society hosts sixth edition of the Great Bearberry Duck Race

SUNDRE – Hundreds of rubber duckies were recently released – and subsequently recaptured – to race in a local creek in support of the Sundre Aquaplex.

The Sundre & District Aquatic Society’s sixth edition of the Great Bearberry Duck Race fundraiser was held on Sunday, July 2 under sunny blue skies.

The event also featured free swims and family entertainment in the lead-up to the numbered ducks being unleashed into the meandering creek with volunteers waiting downstream to retrieve them all.

Once again, all of the 500 available rubber duckies were spoken for at $10 apiece and overall, the fundraiser brought in about $5,400, said Kari McQuaid, the indoor pool and fitness centre’s manager.

The prize-winning duck was purchased by Frank Watson, who had the choice between an annual family pass to the Aquaplex or a $500 cash payout. Second prize went to Jane Thompson, who had the choice between an annual individual pass to the indoor pool or $350. In third place was Bruno Laporte, who was awarded an individual 20 punch pass to the Aquaplex.

Funds raised help support ongoing operations as well as maintenance and repairs.
