A fatal crash in the early morning hours on Saturday claimed the life of a man from Olds.

On Dec. 15 at about 5:20 a.m., the Sundre RCMP, Sundre Fire Department and EMS were called to a motor vehicle collision on Highway 27 near the Rge. Rd. 44 intersection east of town, where an eastbound pickup truck collided with a westbound car, police reported.

A 22-year-old male driver from Sundre, who was driving the truck, was transported to a Calgary-area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the car, 39-year-old Darryl Hyslop from Olds, was pronounced deceased at the scene, said a press release.

Road conditions were favourable at the time of the collision, said police.

Traffic in both east- and westbound lanes was temporarily rerouted for the investigation and scene cleanup. Chinook Arch Victim's Services has been engaged to assist with providing support to those affected.

Sundre RCMP will continue to investigate to determine the cause of the collision, and alcohol consumption has not been ruled out.

“The RCMP would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family of Mr. Hyslop for their loss,” said Cpl. Joe Mandel, of the Sundre RCMP detachment.

“It is tragic at any time to lose a loved one, especially more so during the holiday season,” he added.

An update will be provided when new information becomes available.
