Participating in River Valley School's annual orange and grapefruit sale provides students in grades 3-8 the chance to engage and connect with the community, said the school's principal.
"One of the greatest benefits of this fundraising event is the opportunity it gives to students to connect with and serve their community ó we are very grateful for the continued support of everyone involved," Leslie Cooper-Shand told the Round Up last week.
The 32nd annual sale was a big success again this year ó more than 1,600 boxes of oranges and grapefruit were sold. The event is made possible through contributions and collaboration among residents, the Sundre IGA, school staff, students, as well as the parent council. The top-selling student in each grade receives a cash prize, as does the classroom with the highest sales, she said.
"This is the most significant fundraiser that we do at the school."
The dollars earned go to support programs such as the Quest Theatre residency that is spending time with students this week, human curriculum presentations like the recent Robb Nash visit, as well as the digital citizenship presentations the school recently engaged in, the principal said.
Among other initiatives, the fundraiser "also supports events like the science fair, our Renaissance program and something we are very excited about ó a school-wide Astrodome presentation coming this spring."
