Fundraisers and donations help keep Sundre Aquaplex afloat

Work on new hot tub at Sundre’s indoor pool and fitness centre remains underway

SUNDRE – In partnership with a local business on its mission to keep afloat the Sundre Aquaplex, the Sundre & District Aquatic Society introduced a second raffle fundraiser this season in conjunction with another that has been running for six years.

The local Freson Bros. teamed up with the society on the new raffle fundraiser that boasts a top prize worth $2,000 in gift cards at the grocery store and complements the well-established liquor store shopping spree in which winners are offered the chance to load up a cart in 60 seconds at Main Avenue Cold Beer & Liquor Store.

Kari McQuaid, the Aquaplex’s manager, said the raffles brought in a combined $16,710.

The raffles and other fundraisers, as well as donations such as a recent $10,000 contribution from TAQA, not only help keep the Aquaplex open, but also facilitate upgrades, such as the pool’s hot tub that in 2022 was deemed to no longer meet health codes and had to be replaced.

That project got underway this past fall, and construction on the new hot tub remains underway, said McQuaid.

“Concrete has been jackhammered out, and we are waiting for the pool specialists to come and do the engineered changes to comply with Alberta Health requirements,” she told the Albertan.

Although the indoor pool and fitness centre is governed by a volunteer board and not technically owned by the town, annual recreational grant funding provided by the municipality in partnership with Mountain View County also help sustain the facility's ongoing operations.
