Council heard during last week’s Feb. 19 meeting that construction on the community gazebo at the Greenwood Campground is expected to get underway once the ground thaws.

Work on the community gazebo is expected to get started within the coming months once conditions can accommodate construction.

“The intent is to break ground by the first of April or earlier if the frost is out of the ground,” said Linda Nelson, chief administrative officer, in a report to council during the Feb. 19 meeting.

Plans for the structure, which will be built at Greenwood Campground and be able to, for example, host outdoor events such as folk music festivals, have been underway since last summer.

Nelson told council that Moe Fahey would be assuming the lead role in seeing the gazebo through to completion.

“She has agreed again to come forward and complete the project, as she had completed most of the legwork and communication with local industries,” said Nelson.

“She has to date had great success with donations and contributions towards the project. These commitments will be celebrated by signage on site…she’s been absolutely fantastic with going out and involving the community and getting this going,” said the chief administrative officer, adding periodical updates will be provided as the project progresses.

Community services manager Sue Nelson also asked if council would leave a design decision about firepits up to the planners or whether a motion would be required.

Mayor Terry Leslie expressed confidence in Fahey’s judgement, and suggested leaving the decision in her hands. Without any members of council expressing reservations with that approach, a motion was unanimously carried to accept the report for information.
