Two local women donated their long locks for cancer last week and have a goal to raise $5,000.

Ashley Taylor, 22, and Jamie Robins, 30, started collecting donations in mid-October and will be finishing up this week. On Friday they were about $1,500 short of their goal.

They decided to raise funds for breast cancer research because they have both had people in their lives diagnosed with it. The money they are raising will be donated to the Canadian Breast Cancer Society and their hair will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.

“We both know people personally. I have quite a few people that I know that have breast cancer. So we got talking about it and decided let's do it,” said Robins.

Tears raced down her cheeks when the buzzer first skimmed her scalp. Afterwards, both women got a pink breast cancer symbol dyed on their freshly buzzed heads.

“My grandmother got breast cancer. And we both work in health care so we see it all the time,” said Taylor.

Taylor works at the Sundre hospital and Robins works at Greenwood Family Physicians, which is how they met.

“People have been pledging us a cash amount and then Ashley set up a website for people to donate online,” explained Robins.

When asked how they felt after getting their heads shaved, they giggled, looked at each other and rubbed each other's heads.

“I love it! It's just hair, it will grow back,” said Robins.

They expressed gratitude for all of the support they received from people in the community.
