SUNDRE – After a busy year that saw a record number of calls, the Sundre Fire Department’s members experienced a largely uneventful holiday to wrap up 2024.

“It was quiet,” said Chief Ross Clews.

“But we’ve typically always been quiet around Christmas and New Years,” Clews told the Albertan.

From Dec. 24 to Jan. 1, there was a total of nine calls, he said.

Most of them – six overall – were medical first responses.

And while the other three had technically been called in as fires, they all turned out to be non-emergencies.

“One was a cooking incident that filled the house with smoke,” said Clews.

The other two were called in when passersby drove past what they believed to be unfolding structure fires.

But both turned out to be controlled burns – one that involved a barn that was burnt down with the property owner having obtained a permit to do so, while the other was a brush pile, he said.
