The Sundre museum's 6th annual Winterfest featured a world-class ice sculpture artist.

On Feb. 16 and 17, Julian Lee from Calgary carved sculptures out of ice blocks on the museum grounds.

Marilyn Nickeson, volunteer from the museum, said Lee has been to various competitions and was recently at an annual competition in Lake Louise, where his team created a three-piece sculpture featuring the song Monster Mash.

At the event, Lee said the ideal weather for ice carving is -10, but the weather was above 0.

Other ice carvers attended Winterfest as well, including Greg McMartin and his son Johnny from Olds.

Jack Nichol, president of the museum, said he is interested in bringing the ice carving back for next year's event.

He said the idea was brought up by one of the museum's volunteers.

A total of five sculptures were created over the two-day period and two are being moved to the museum reception centre, by the gazebo, he said.

On the Saturday, 333 adults attended Winterfest and 264 adults went on Sunday, along with many children. Nichol said it was a good turnout.

There were various events going on over the Family Day weekend, including face painting, wagon rides and more.

Displays from the Sundre camera club and a quilting club were in the Elks Hall, where various entertainment was also held.

Other guests at the event included wildfire rangers in the area.

A female hawk, named Wicked, was at the old ranger station for people to see.

ìWe were in the glow of how successful it was; we were happy,î said Nickeson, of the event.
