SUNDRE — A couple of male suspects who crashed a truck through IGA’s west-facing double sliding doors with the intention of taking an ATM left empty-handed, said police.
“The males quickly came to the realization that the ATM was not stocked with money, and that the access door was open. The males quickly returned to the vehicle and fled the scene in the pickup truck,” Sundre RCMP said in a release issued yesterday.
On Friday, Nov. 15 just before 2 a.m., local police reported receiving a complaint that a white Chevrolet pickup truck had forcefully backed through the doors of the grocery store.
“Once the doors were smashed, two males entered the store, and approached the ATM inside the west entrance of the store. One of the males dragged a chain into the store, clearly with the intention to haul the ATM out of the store,” reads a statement issued by Cpl. Joe Mandel.
“The truck was found abandoned on Highway 22 north of Sundre several minutes later and determined to have been stolen from the Stettler area the previous evening.”
The break-in was video recorded by the business’s security cameras, but the suspects donned hoods, masks and gloves to obscure their identity.
“It is evident that these thieves took some time and planned this event only to find that our local business took preventative measures to thwart such a theft,” the release states.
“Our office praises such vigilance, though the business still experienced a disruption to their operations as well as suffering a cost for the damages sustained by these ignorant individuals,” wrote Mandel.
The Sundre RCMP asks anyone with information related to the break-in, including details that could help identify those responsible, to contact the detachment at 403-638-3675.
