Juno Award nominee helps make fire safety awareness more fun

Mary Lambert joins members of the Sundre Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week presentation at River Valley School

SUNDRE – With the entertainingly performative musical assistance of Juno Award nominee Mary Lambert, a few members of the local fire department made raising awareness about the importance of fire safety more fun last week during a presentation at River Valley School.

The annual Fire Prevention Week ran from Oct. 8 - 14 and this year's theme was Cooking Safety Starts With YOU.

Capt. Ryan Martens was joined on Oct. 12 by colleagues Lt. Scott Parker and firefighter Tristan Wolfe with mascot Sparky also making an appearance for all of the students in kindergarten to Grade 6.

Parker at one point donned a full kit including breathing apparatus to demonstrate what is worn by firefighters entering a structure fire as well as what they sound like. Students were told if they ever find themselves in such a situation not to hide from or be scared by what can in the chaotic conditions created by a fire appear to be quite an intimidating presence who sounds – and in thick smoke with the helmet on might even look – like Darth Vader.

The fire department has also been coordinating with the school on the Grade 4 poster contest, with this year's winner to be announced later this month on Oct. 25 in conjunction with the annual community pumpkin carving at the fire hall.
